Himalayan Balsam is a non-native, invasive plant species. Although often considered to be quite pretty, it out competes native flora resulting in a loss of habitat and biodiversity. During winter months Himalayan Balsam dies back leaving the river banks exposed and vulnerable to erosion. Next erosion can increase the amount of suspended sediment which reduces water quality. The South West branch of FWAG are running a project to clear this plant from the river Otter.
Student Invasive Non Native Group
SINNG is a student Local Action Group based at Cornwall College Newquay. Launched in 2010, they work to increase action and awareness on INNS (Invasive Non-Native Species) and reduce the impacts that such species currently have on native wildlife. Action includes practical fieldwork, research, public engagement and raising awareness. SINNG also have a twitter and facebook presence to spread their message more easily.
