In year 7, you are allowed to use a bunsen burner at last but you have to do this safely. If you can demonstrate this to your teacher, you will be issued with a bunsen burner licence which you can keep in your planner or science book.
We will also study all about the arrangement of particles in the three main states of matter which are solid, liquid and gas. You can see some images of these three showing the particles above. We learn the three standard tests for oxygen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen.
Acids & alkalis
A chemical can be measured on the pH scale to see if it is either ACID, ALKALI or NEUTRAL. Number 7 on the pH scale means that the substance is neutral, in other words that it is neither acid nor alkali.
Before you are allowed to try lighting a bunsen burner, you must know the stages involved and be able to label the parts. You should have a labelled drawing and a list of steps for safe lighting.
Do you know how to label a bunsen burner? No Licence until you can!
